Chinese police and protesters clash over the demolition of the mosque
Clashes broke out between Chinese police and civilians in a Muslim-dominated area of southwest China. The Vehicle Post reported that police were pulling down the domed roof of a centuries-old Najiaying mosque here and protesters tried to block it. Videos viral on Twitter showed police having to retreat, while protesters staged an overnight sit-in outside the gate.
According to the news, the incident is related to a 2020 court ruling that declared some of the mosque's most recent renovations illegal and ordered demolition. On Sunday, the Tonghai County police termed the incident as seriously damaging to orderly social management.
The people of the area were against surrender. The county police said that if the people surrendered, they would be given a lighter punishment. In fact, there is already a ban on religious programs in the country and the government is already strict against the religious beliefs of Muslims. The Chinese administration is also dealing with the millions of Turkic speaking people in the north-west of Xinjiang very strictly.
A South Korean Kookmin University student reportedly missing in Hong Kong after questioning has not returned to the city. Amnesty International said Abuduwely Abdurehman, who was born in western China's Xinjiang, traveled from South Korea to Hong Kong on May 10 to visit a friend, but has not been traced. He was pursuing his doctorate here.
