The Right Way to Spend Money (If You Want to Be Happier)

Spend on experiences, not things. In our survey of loan applicants mentioned above, we found that more than 80% of people under 30 reported deriving more happiness from buying experiences — like trips, concerts, or special meals —than from buying material things, such as gadgets or clothes. (Sixty-two percent of respondents were Gen Z or Millennials.)

Nonetheless, it’s easy to get sucked into buying material things, partly because they’re so easy to compare. One of us (Elizabeth) was perfectly content with her iPhone 8, until she received a text message offering her a shiny new iPhone 11. (No money down!) She caught herself increasingly leaving the rapidly aging iPhone 8 on the edge of tables, nightstands, and sinks, unconsciously waiting for its demise. This behavior is not uncommon. Research shows that when a desirable upgrade becomes available, people often become careless with their existing products.

The fact that material things are so easy to compare helps explain why they are often unsatisfying. After all, even the iPhone 11 might not look so great next to the iPhone 11 Max Pro. In contrast, experiences aren’t so easy to compare.

It can be hard to find time to enjoy special experiences, especially for those of us juggling lots of responsibilities. But the gig economy has made it easier and more affordable for many of us to buy free time. Beyond well-known time-saving services like DoorDash, Dunzo, and TaskRabbit, consumers are turning to creative companies like Hello Alfred, a kind of modern butler service that claims to have saved its members a combined total of more than 50 years through its array of services.

Spending money on time-saving services might seem indulgent given the current economic climate. But when we surveyed 15,000 Americans in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, people who reported buying time (like saving travel time by purchasing more expensive groceries from a closer grocery store), exhibited 10% higher life satisfaction compared to those who didn’t. Remarkably, this relationship held up even for people making under $40,000 per year.

Indeed, buying time appears to cause happiness levels to rise. As part of a study published in 2017, 60 working adults received $40 to spend on a time-saving purchase one weekend. On another weekend, those same individuals got another $40 to spend on a material thing. Compared to buying a material thing, buying time led people to experience more positive moods and reduced their feelings of time pressure. Yet, when other working adults were asked how they would spend a $40 windfall, only 2% planned to make a time-saving purchase.

Invest in others. Try this experiment on yourself: Grab a $10 or a $20 bill and use it to benefit someone else today. You could send a small gift to a friend, help out a stranger who’s short on cash at the grocery store, or make a donation to a charity that’s important to you. Although it might be tempting to spend this money on yourself, a decade of research shows that you’re more likely to derive happiness from spending it on someone else. In fact, even people who are struggling to meet their own basic needs exhibit this “warm glow” from giving to others.

But that doesn’t mean that giving always makes everyone happy. Instead, it matters how and why you give. It’s important that you feel like your decision to give is made freely — that it is something you choose to do, not something you feel forced to do by a pushy co-worker asking for yet another donation to their pet cause. Look for giving opportunities that will enable you to see how your generosity is making a difference for a person or cause you genuinely care about. And you can start small. Research shows that giving even a few dollars can boost your mood.

It’s important to note that some of this research has its limitations, as spending choices that promote happiness can also be dependent on our unique personalities. (For instance, in one experiment, 79 participants received a voucher to make a purchase at either a bar or a bookstore. Although both types of purchases provided extroverts with a small boost in happiness, introverts felt much happier after hitting the bookstore rather than the bar.) But this small study is just the beginning of the next chapter of research on spending and happiness.

The Times said in a filing that it seeks to hold Microsoft and OpenAI to account for the “billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages” it believes it is owed.

The New York Times on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI, the company behind popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, accusing the pair of infringing copyright and abusing the newspaper’s intellectual property.

The NYT said in a filing with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York that it seeks to hold Microsoft and OpenAI to account for the “billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages” it believes it is owed for the “unlawful copying and use of The Times’s uniquely valuable works.”

In its lawsuit, the Times accused Microsoft and OpenAI of creating a business model based on “mass copyright infringement,” stating that the companies’ AI systems were “used to create multiple reproductions of The Times’s intellectual property for the purpose of creating the GPT models that exploit and, in many cases, retain large portions of the copyrightable expression contained in those works.”

The Times said in an emailed statement that it “recognizes the power and potential of GenAI for the public and for journalism,” but added that journalistic material should be used for commercial gain with permission from the original source.

“These tools were built with and continue to use independent journalism and content that is only available because we and our peers reported, edited, and fact-checked it at high cost and with considerable expertise,” the Times said.

“Settled copyright law protects our journalism and content. If Microsoft and OpenAI want to use our work for commercial purposes, the law requires that they first obtain our permission. They have not done so.”

The New York Times is represented in the proceedings by Susman Godfrey, the litigation firm that represented Dominion Voting Systems in its defamation suit against Fox News that culminated in a $787.5 million settlement.

Other suits

Susman Godfrey is also representing author Julian Sancton and other writers in a separate lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft that accuses the companies of using copyrighted materials without permission to train several versions of ChatGPT.

The NYT is one of numerous media organizations pursuing compensation from companies behind some of the most advanced general artificial intelligence models, for the alleged usage of their content to train AI programs.

OpenAI is the creator of GPT, a large language model that can produce humanlike content in response to user prompts. It does this thanks to billions of parameters’ worth of data, which is obtained from public web data up until 2021.

This has created a dilemma for media publishers and creators, which are finding their own content being used and reimagined by generative AI models like ChatGPT, Dall-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion. In numerous cases, the content produced by these programs can look similar to the source material.

OpenAI has tried to allay news publishers concerns. In December, the company announced a partnership with Axel Springer — the parent company of Business Insider, Politico, and European outlets Bild and Welt — which would license its content to OpenAI in return for a fee.

The financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

In its lawsuit Wednesday, the Times accused Microsoft and OpenAI of creating a business model based on “mass copyright infringement,” stating that the companies’ AI systems were “used to create multiple reproductions of The Times’s intellectual property for the purpose of creating the GPT models that exploit and, in many cases, retain large portions of the copyrightable expression contained in those works.”

Additionally, zucchini contains trace amounts of calcium, zinc, iron, and various B vitamins. Notably, its generous vitamin A content can contribute to maintaining healthy vision and a robust immune system. Raw zucchini has a similar nutritional profile to cooked zucchini, albeit with lower vitamin A levels and higher vitamin C content.

Zucchini Benefits

Owing to its strong nutritional profile, zucchini has plenty of health benefits, including:

1. Promotes Digestive Health

Zucchini contributes to maintaining a healthy digestive system through multiple mechanisms. Firstly, its high water content aids in softening stools, facilitating easier passage and lowering the likelihood of constipation. Additionally, zucchini is a source of both insoluble and soluble fibre.

Insoluble fibre boosts stool bulk and promotes smoother movement of food through the digestive tract, further diminishing the risk of constipation. Meanwhile, soluble fibre serves as nourishment for beneficial gut bacteria, fostering the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These SCFAs, in turn, may help alleviate inflammation and relieve symptoms associated with specific gastrointestinal conditions like Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and ulcerative colitis.

2. Regulates Free Radical Levels

Within the body, free radicals are unstable atoms engaged in combating infections. An excess of free radicals can lead to detrimental effects on the body’s fatty tissue, proteins, and DNA, resulting in a condition referred to as oxidative stress.

This state is associated with a range of health complications. Antioxidants play a crucial role in maintaining a balanced level of free radicals, thereby promoting overall health. Zucchini, rich in antioxidants, has the potential to safeguard against various health issues, including:

Several types of cancer

Cardiovascular disease

Skin disorders

Eye-related disorders

3. Decreases Blood Sugar

Carbohydrates undergo conversion into glucose within the body, potentially leading to elevated blood sugar levels. Zucchini boasts a low carbohydrate content. When individuals opt for zucchini as a substitute for high-carbohydrate foods like pasta, they effectively reduce carbohydrate intake, thereby assisting in the regulation of blood sugar levels.

Low-carbohydrate diets have demonstrated the potential to enhance blood sugar control and potentially reduce the necessity for medication amongst individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes. Additionally, research suggests that the fibre found in fruits and veggies can contribute to decreased blood sugar levels and a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

4. Boosts Eye Health

Zucchini contributes to the enhancement of eye health. Notably, it is rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant with potential benefits for reducing the risk of eye conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Furthermore, zucchini contains essential antioxidants, namely zeaxanthin and lutein, which further aid in diminishing the risk of developing cataracts and AMD, thus supporting overall eye health.

5. Improves Cardiac Health

Zucchini plays a significant role in promoting heart health through various mechanisms. Being a fruit rich in dietary fibre, zucchini contributes to the improvement of cardiac health by reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.

Elevated lipid levels in the bloodstream can heighten the risk of cardiovascular disease. Increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL), commonly known as ‘bad cholesterol’, levels also pose an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and suffering from stroke. Zucchini contains pectin, a water-soluble fibre that has the potential to lower the levels of LDL cholesterol and lipids in the blood, thus supporting overall heart health.

Moreover, zucchini boasts a high potassium content, which aids in the management of elevated blood pressure. This is of paramount importance as high blood pressure serves as a major risk factor for conditions such as heart attacks, peripheral artery disease, heart failure, strokes, and even kidney failure.

Conclusion

Zucchini stands as a versatile squash, loaded with a plethora of minerals, vitamins, and beneficial plant compounds. In addition to the above-mentioned zucchini benefits, this fruit also helps in weight loss, improving bone health, boosting prostate health, and keeping thyroid hormone levels stable. Furthermore, zucchini’s remarkable versatility allows it to be enjoyed in various forms, whether consumed raw or cooked into soups, sandwiches, stews, salads, and baked dishes.

Nutritional Facts of Horseradish

Horseradish is added in small quantities in daily diet. The nutritional value of a 15 gms serving of horseradish adds 7 calories along with the following nutrients,

Protein: less than 1 gram

Carbohydrates: 2 grams

Fat: less than 1 gram

Fibre: 0.5 grams

Traces of potassium, folate, magnesium, calcium and other micronutrients can also be derived.

Horseradish Benefits

Though consumed in small quantities, horseradish benefits are abundant. Easy to incorporate, this vegetable may provide the following benefits

1. May Promote Respiratory Health

Horseradish is well-known for its pungent properties, often eliciting a burning sensation when consumed. Interestingly, this effect can have positive implications for respiratory health. Some studies have indicated that a supplement containing dried horseradish and nasturtium effectively treats sinus infections and bronchitis.

This suggests that horseradish might have a therapeutic potential in alleviating respiratory issues. More research however is necessary to confirm and establish the reaction.

2. May Combat Cell Damage

Horseradish root is naturally rich in antioxidants, which play a crucial role in protecting the body from cellular damage. Antioxidants bind to free radicals, unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress and subsequently damage the cells. This helps protect the cells from free radical damage which in turn minimises the risk of various diseases associated with cellular damage.

3. May Reduce Inflammation

Horseradish contains a chemical compound called sinigrin, which is also present in other members of the mustard plant family. Sinigrin has shown potential in reducing inflammation by influencing parts of the immune system responsible for triggering inflammation.

Though promising, further studies are required to validate the anti-inflammatory properties of sinigrin. It is also suggested that sinigrin may help in reducing the symptoms of atherosclerosis, but more research is necessary to arrive at a definite conclusion.

4. May Avert Cancerous Growth

Studies have shown that horseradish may avert the growth of cancerous cells in lungs, colon, and stomach. It is believed that the anticancer properties of horseradish is a contribution of the compounds found in horseradish. These compounds might avert cancer development.

These conclusions are based on preliminary studies conducted on animal models or in laboratory settings. Research involving human trials is necessary to validate the efficacy and safety of horseradish in preventing cancerous growth.

How to Consume Horseradish?

You can consume horseradish in several ways. Generally available as a condiment, it is consumed in the following ways:

As prepared horseradish which is a blend of grated root, vinegar, sugar, and salt

Horseradish sauce, enriched with sour cream or mayo, is another favourite accompaniment, often served in small quantities with meat or fish

You can craft your own prepared horseradish by grating the root and storing it in vinegar, which can be obtained at stores or online.

Available in supplement and tea forms.

Whichever way you plan to consume horseradish, It is crucial to seek guidance from a healthcare professional to ascertain safe dosages, as there are no established limits for these alternative uses.

Side Effects of Horseradish

The side effects of horseradish are not adequately documented. However, there could be possible side effects as given below:

The intense spiciness may lead to mouth, nose, and stomach irritation.

People with digestive issues, stomach ulcers, or inflammatory bowel disease may have heightened discomfort.

It is recommended to use store-bought horseradish sauce as the sodium levels will be high which enhances the risk of developing high blood pressure, cardiovascular issues, and stroke.

Conclusion

Horseradish, with its pungent taste and aroma, offers potential health benefits, which include combating free radical damage, providing respiratory support, and reducing inflammation. Commonly used as a condiment, you must seek medical advice when using it as a supplement.

How to Identify Poison Ivy?

Poison oak and poison ivy typically have a single stem with blooming branches and three green or reddish-green leaflets per leaf. In the autumn, poison ivy plants produce a green or off-white fruit, and occasionally, the leaves will develop black spots. Since the appearance might vary depending on the season, growth cycle, region, and climate, it is only sometimes possible to distinguish the plant based on its leaves.

Why is Poison Ivy So Dangerous?

You must first understand that urushiol is the stuff that causes a poison ivy plant to be so dangerous. The Toxicodendron plant family contains urease, which can be found on the leaves, stems, roots, and even the berries of the plants. You won’t be able to tell which specific plant you came into contact with by the rash it causes. This is because poison ivy, oak, and sumac produce urushiol.

Causes of Poison Ivy Rash

Poison oak’s fruit, leaves, stems, roots, and sap all contain urushiol, which is a light and colourless oil. Urushiol changes colour when exposed to air, going from brown to black. Plant leaves also have tiny black dots.

There are various ways to come into contact with urushiol:

By rubbing against the leaves or touching the sap of the poisonous plant.

Contacting an object with urushiols, such as pet fur or gardening tools.

By inhaling smoke produced when poisonous plants are burned.

Urushiol is also found in ginkgo fruit and mango skin, which can cause symptoms resembling poison ivy dermatitis.

About 90% of those who come into contact with poison ivy oil get an itchy rash. A reaction can be triggered by as little as 50 micrograms (g) of urushiol. Even if you’ve never had a poison ivy rash before, you can develop one at any time in your life.

Symptoms of Poison Ivy Rash

Usually, the poison ivy rash develops in a straight line depending on the way the plant scrapes against your skin. However, the rash can be more dispersed if it comes into contact with clothes and pet fur. Typically, the reaction begins any time between 24 hours to 72 hours after coming into contact.

Poison ivy rash symptoms and signs include:

Redness

Itching

Swelling

Blisters

Difficulty breathing if the smoke from burning poison ivy gets into your lungs.

Poison Ivy – Treatment

If you come in contact with poison ivy on skin or any other hazardous plant, wash your skin immediately. Within minutes, its oil might cling to your skin. So, use cool water and soap as it can aid in oil removal or stop oil from spreading. Products with specific cleaners, such as mineral oil, may be helpful. Some over-the-counter medications can aid with rashes’ discomfort and itching. These consist of:

Hydrocortisone creams

Calamine lotion

Antihistamine tablets

To ascertain whether you might have come into contact with a deadly plant, a medical professional will examine the rash, evaluate your symptoms, and ask you questions. In addition to poisonous plants, other allergens and irritants can result in contact dermatitis or an itchy rash. Your provider will rule out other skin disorders or causes if you haven’t been outside or in close proximity to plants.

Conclusion

With the information in this blog at your disposal, you can easily travel through the woods and your own garden while knowing how to recognise, avoid, and efficiently handle situations related to poison ivy. So, you can now enjoy the outdoors without worrying about itchy repercussions.

12 spoonfuls of the batter and spread it out to make a small pancake.

Cook one side until it is light brown in colour.

Flip it carefully and cook the other side as well.

You can store these pancakes in a refrigerator and microwave them every time you want to serve them.

Top them with chocolate chips, butter, or jam when you serve.

Conclusion

Here’s a detailed guide on how to fund your business, whether you’re just beginning or you have a few years under your belt.

Whether you’re just starting your business or growing an existing one, there are a multitude of options for small business funding to help meet the needs of your unique situation. To help you understand how to fund a small business, this guide will detail startup necessities, outline funding options, and walk through what to consider when selecting a funding option.

Startup necessities

You should go into seeking funding for a new business armed with some information. First, decide what’s on your "need" list and what’s on your "it can wait" list. Pose the question this way: What is the bare minimum required you need to get your venture off the ground?

At the same time, you can’t skimp on the necessities. This will, of course, be a major investment. So, if — when thinking through your new business venture — you put something on the "it can wait" list, check with other areas that may be affected if that area doesn’t get funded.

Here are some common business expenses and the questions surrounding them to consider before trying to secure funding:

Payroll — How many employees do you have, what are you paying them, and how many employees will you have in the next six months? Startup and small businesses don’t always stay small, so think about how many people you will need to start, but also how many you may need before you start making a profit. Also, consider how you’re going to pay yourself. As the founder of the small business, you need to live, too.

Insurance — Is your business prepared if disaster strikes? Will you be offering health insurance to your employees?

Licensing, permits, and taxes — Doing business costs money and you want to make sure you won’t be running into any legal trouble. How much capital do you need to cover licenses, permits, and taxes?

Rent and utilities — If you’re moving your business into a physical space, make sure you can afford your lease and utility costs to keep things running. Make sure you clearly understand the terms of a commercial lease before signing a contract.

Equipment — Do you need computers, phones, machinery, or other forms of equipment? Is renting or leasing equipment a possibility? Can you get equipment used? How much personal protective equipment (PPE) do you need to buy to protect worker and/or customer health?

Inventory and upcoming orders — Do you have enough raw product to make your business continue to operate? If you don’t, should you be investing in more?

Advertising and website — You have to let people know you exist, and this doesn’t happen without advertising and a good website. Perhaps you will buy social media ads, rent billboards, put an ad in a local magazine, or optimize your site for the best search engine results. All of this costs money.

All the extras — Will you or your employees need to travel? Are there consultants in your field you should pay for some advice? Will you need a lawyer on retainer or to handle any sort of small business matter such as obtaining a copyright or trademark?

Types of small business funding

There is no "right" way to fund your business, whether you’re looking for startup funding or to maintain or grow your existing business. Some types of funding work better for different stages of your business, and sometimes the right answer might be a combination of funding types.

Here are some common ways to fund your business:

Traditional loans

If you are a new business, you might not have a credit history. In that case, traditional lenders will look at your personal credit when deciding whether to give you a loan. Your credit history is the track record of how promptly you pay your bills and is used to determine how risky it is to lend to you. Traditional lenders, like banks, are cautious with their money. If your credit score is below 680, there may not be many options for you in the traditional lending arena. On the other hand, if your business is more established (two or more years in operation) and you have good credit and

at least $100,000 a year in revenue, you’ll probably find very good interest rates from a traditional lender.

Online lenders

If your credit score isn’t up to par or you don’t have much time in business, you might look at popular online lenders for a loan. According to a recent Small Business Credit Survey by the Federal Reserve, 22% of the businesses surveyed applied for funds through online lenders.

Personal loans

If you have a new business but your personal credit score is high, you might consider taking out a personal loan for funding. Be aware, though, that if your business fails, this will seriously impact your personal credit.

Microlenders

As the name suggests, a microloan is a very small loan, typically of less than $50,000 given out by individuals rather than traditional lending institutions. These loans may also be offered through government organizations such as the Small Business Administration (SBA) or nonprofits. If you don’t need to borrow a lot of money, this could be a good direction.

Self-funding

You might be surprised by what you can do on a limited budget. Bootstrapping your own business can pay off down the road if you want to apply for a loan because it shows perseverance and dedication. The big question is whether you can afford to invest your own money and if it’s enough to accomplish your goals.

Crowdfunding will require you to pitch your business idea online through popular sites such as Kickstarter or Indiegogo to get upfront pledges to fund the business or product. However, you have to know how to market yourself and be savvy with web content for these options to work.

Friends and family

This can be a risky way to fund a business, but if you treat the situation professionally, it might work out. Friends or family helping to fund your business should earn interest or equity in the company and should be given monthly payments. Paperwork should still be drawn up.

The big question is whether you can afford to invest your own money and if it’s enough to accomplish your goals.

Investors

Are you involved in your local entrepreneurial community? It can be a good place to find people willing to invest in your business and ideas. Diligently research any investors and venture capitalists and work to come to an agreement on a term sheet about your business arrangement.

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding will require you to pitch your business idea online through popular sites such as Kickstarter or Indiegogo to get upfront pledges to fund the business or product. However, you have to know how to market yourself and be savvy with web content for these options to work.

Friends and family

This can be a risky way to fund a business, but if you treat the situation professionally, it might work out. Friends or family helping to fund your business should earn interest or equity in the company and should be given monthly payments. Paperwork should still be drawn up.

Invoice factoring

When a business sells its outstanding invoices to a factoring company, it is called invoice factoring. An invoice factoring company quickly repays the business a percentage of what the invoice is worth, usually between 75% and 90%. Once the full invoice is paid, the factoring company pays your business the remainder of the invoice while subtracting its factoring charge and a factoring fee. This isn’t a loan, but it can help companies cover cash flow issues. Because it isn’t a loan, whether a factoring company will work with your small business or not is not as dependent on your credit score, but rather on the credit scores of your clients who the company will be depending on to pay in a timely fashion.

Small business grants to consider

Many government entities, corporations, and nonprofits offer money for people to launch or grow small businesses. Some small business grants are open to any small business while others are targeted to specific demographics, like businesses owned by minorities, women, or veterans. The website Grants.gov also serves as the largest database for federal grant opportunities.

Government grants

Government grants are available for small businesses at the federal, state, and local levels for a variety of different business types and circumstances. A few examples of government grants include:

U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA): MDBA loans and targeted grants are designed to help minority-owned businesses grow.

Farmers Market Promotion Program: Businesses in the agricultural sector can benefit from the Farmers Market Promotion Program, which aims to increase applicable marketplaces and manufacturer-to-consumer products. These businesses can receive educational resources, training, and financial support.

Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR): The SBIR Program provides grants to small businesses with the ability to perform federal research for the potential to curate profit-oriented goods and services.

helped to grow the overall economy. Small businesses can submit their application for the chance to win a $25,000 grand prize during the Chamber’s Big Week for Small Business.

Industry-specific grants

Businesses with a specific niche or operating in a specialized industry can benefit from industry-specific grants. These grants aren’t open to all small businesses and you must carefully consider the requirements and eligibility guidelines before applying. A couple of examples of industry-specific grants include:

Amazon’s Black Business Accelerator Program: The Black Business Accelerator Program is designed to benefit Black sellers on Amazon. It offers advice, resources, mentorship opportunities, and financial and promotional support. Eligible sellers receive access to cash grant opportunities, advertising credits, money towards startup costs, and more.

Amber Grant Foundation: Founded in 1998, the Amber Grant Foundation seeks to support women entrepreneurs by awarding a $10,000 grant each month and a $25,000 grant each December. Grant winners are chosen based on the applicant’s story and vision for their business.

Black Founder Startup Grant: Backed by the SoGal Foundation, this program awards up to $10,000 in grants to Black and multiracial women and nonbinary entrepreneurs. The Black Founder Startup Grant program accepts applications year-round.

General small business grants

Nonprofit and larger corporations offer grant opportunities and other funding options to small businesses based on their eligibility and industry. Here are a few general small business grants to consider:

Business Warrior: Business Warrior’s mission is to provide small businesses with direct access to capital at low-interest rates and with short approval times.

GoFundMe Small Business Relief Fund: GoFundMe assists qualifying small businesses that were negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic by matching $500 grants to those that raise the same amount in a GoFundMe campaign.

Dream Big Awards: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s annual Dream Big Awards seek to recognize small businesses across the country that have helped to grow the overall economy. Small businesses can submit their application for the chance to win a $25,000 grand prize during the Chamber’s Big Week for Small Business.

Businesses with a specific niche or operating in a specialized industry can benefit from industry-specific grants. This program grants up to $2,500 to Etsy sellers who have been through a natural disaster.

Jobber Grants Program: This program is meant for businesses in the home service field, such as landscaping or pool servicing. The Jobber Grants Program provides grants between $2,500 and $15,000.

Diversity business grants

Diversity business grants are programs that seek to elevate minorities and other underrepresented communities by providing financial resources, mentorships, and networking opportunities. Here are some examples of diversity business grants:

Amazon’s Black Business Accelerator Program: The Black Business Accelerator Program is designed to benefit Black sellers on Amazon. It offers advice, resources, mentorship opportunities, and financial and promotional support. Eligible sellers receive access to cash grant opportunities, advertising credits, money towards startup costs, and more.

Ways to make your business attractive to investors and lenders

Write a business plan

Writing a robust business plan is a good way to present your small business to banks and potential investors. It should include your personal story and be able to convey your passion for your small business.

The business plan will require you to do a fair amount of market research and convey that you understand the industry you are entering and the direction in which you want to take your business. Back up your financial projections with data. A business plan should also include a clear business model as well as a marketing plan.

Build your credit score

Before you apply for funding from a traditional lender or even some online lenders, it is crucial you know your business credit score as well as your personal credit score. If they aren’t up to snuff, take steps to raise them such as by paying down debt or removing any incorrect derogatory items. You can even take it one step further by opening a business credit card. When you use the card each month and pay off the balance by the due date, you’re building your business credit, which increases your credit score. This is especially helpful if you’re a new business owner looking to build a credit score quickly.

Crunch the numbers

At the end of the day, investors take a chance on businesses they hope can make them a return on their investment. Creditors, on the other hand, may want to see how your business is profiting financially before they provide you with a loan. To instill confidence in investors and creditors, it’s important to crunch the numbers in your business.

Crunching the numbers means displaying your business’s financial track record including where the business currently stands in terms of cash flow and the level of debt you've accumulated. If your business is new, lay out a clear plan of how you’re going to complete your financial goals and when investors can expect to see a return on investment in your business.

Craft a narrative

Investors are used to hearing pitches from hopeful business owners filled with hard data, metrics, and business analytics. While these details are critical to any successful pitch, they’re not the only factors that can sway an investor in favor of your business. Investors are humans, too, and are interested in the story behind the business you are pitching.

Come up with a strong narrative that will explain how you came up with your business idea, what drives you in your business, the impact you intend your business to have on the world, and more. The more compelling the narrative, the greater the chance investors will feel compelled to take a chance on your

 business.

Create a clear investment structure

Before investing in your business, investors want to know you have a clear layout of the investment structure. For example, legal ramifications, including possible liability exposure, can play a factor in their decision on whether or not to invest. Would the investor be a shareholder or partner? If so, would they be able to make business decisions alongside the business owner?

It’s also important to create a stockholder’s agreement that lays out each owner’s rights and obligations, including if the owner wants to sell, if the business shuts down, and other issues. Once you have a clear investment structure, it’s time to negotiate all the details with your investors.

Do you have any collateral?

Do your story and business idea seem like something you could take to an investor?

Have you established a solid enough business plan to talk to an investor or a traditional bank?

The goal of any type of funding should be to benefit your business, not saddle you with debt. So, it’s wise to choose a funding type that best fits your financial needs and will help you reach your business goals

High Stomach Acid Causes

Cells in your stomach lining produce stomach acid or gastric acid that is needed for the digestion of food and for the absorption of nutrients from your diet. Stomach acid has a crucial role to play in the upkeep of your digestive system as well as in absorbing the nutrients required for various bodily functions.

Often there are conditions that contribute to excess production of stomach acid. These conditions instigate the overproduction of gastrin, the hormone that instructs your stomach to produce higher levels of stomach acid. High stomach acid can cause unpleasant symptoms and has to be treated immediately. Some of the high stomach acid causes are given below:

1. Ellison Syndrome

This is a rare condition wherein a gastrinoma, a tumour, forms in your duodenum and pancreas. These tumours increase the production of gastrin, which is one of the high stomach acid causes.

2. Helicobacter Pylori

This is a bacteria that is the primary cause of stomach ulcers and gastritis. This bacteria damages your stomach tissues as well as the duodenum. Being infected by this bacteria can result in the secretion of more stomach acid.

3. Medication

Certain medications like H2 blockers can reduce stomach acid production. However, people who are on this medication are prone to high stomach acid production (rebound effect) when they abruptly stop taking the H2 blockers after using them for a long time.

4. Stress

Stress is often considered one of the high stomach acid causes. Prostaglandins, the hormone-like substance, protects the stomach lining from acid. Chronic stress can affect the hormonal balance which can increases the risk of developing ulcers.

5. Dialysis

People with chronic kidney failure have to undergo frequent dialysis for proper kidney functioning. Dialysis increases the production of gastrin, which in turn leads to higher stomach acid production.

High Stomach Acid Symptoms

High stomach acid causes unpleasant symptoms as well as discomfort. Some of the high stomach acid symptoms are:

Heartburn

Nausea or vomiting

Bloating

Diarrhoea

Weight loss

Lack of appetite

Abdominal pain

These symptoms are similar to those associated with digestive issues. If these symptoms persist or occur frequently, seeking medical attention is suggested to avoid further health complications.

High stomach acid can lead to digestive issues and so does low stomach acid. Low stomach acid will lead to indigestion and the nutrients from the diet will not be absorbed. This will lead to various deficiencies, malnutrition, and, in rare cases, bacterial imbalance.

High Stomach Acid Treatment Options

When stomach acid production goes out of proportion, it can lead to various other health issues. Several stomach acid treatment options are available to reduce the production of stomach acid to maintain it within healthy levels.

The most common treatment method is the use of proton pump inhibitors. This medication helps to lower the stomach acid levels. PPIs are normally administered orally, but in severe cases, they can be given by IV.

If your high stomach acid condition is due to H pylori infection, you may be prescribed antibiotics along with PPIs. Antibiotics help in dealing with bacterial infection, while PPIs lower stomach acid production.

For Zollinger Ellison Syndrome, surgery may be suggested to remove gastrinomos. People with severe ulcers might have to undergo gastrectomy to remove part of their stomach or vagotomy to remove the vagus nerve.

The following treatment options are suggested for people with heartburn as a symptom of stomach acid.

Dietary changes

Eating small portions at short intervals

A low-carb diet

Avoiding caffeine, alcohol, or carbonated beverages

Avoiding foods that trigger heartburn.

Conclusion

Stomach acid has a pivotal role in aiding digestion and the absorption of nutrients from your diet. When stomach acid production exceeds normal levels, it may cause discomfort and painful symptoms like heartburn, weakness, nausea, abdominal pain, and bloating. There are several causes for high stomach acid production. If left untreated, it could lead to serious conditions like ulcers, GERD, etc. If the high stomach acid symptoms persist and cause unmanageable discomfort, you should seek immediate medical attention to avoid further complications.

Precautions to be Considered When Taking Propranolol

If you are prescribed propranolol for heart-related issues, anxiety symptoms, or migraines, you should take certain precautions as mentioned below:

One of the side effects of propranolol is drowsiness. Do not drive, use any machine, or engage in any activity that requires concentration and alertness till you understand how the drug affects you.

Do not stop the drug without consulting your doctor. Stopping the drug suddenly can affect your heart rhythm and blood pressure, aggravate chest pain, or cause a heart attack. Your doctor will taper the dosage, extending it for weeks to prevent these effects.

People with diabetes should take extra care while using propranolol as it lowers blood sugar. This drug will conceal the symptoms of low blood sugar and will further lower the blood sugar levels.

If you have asthma or any breathing issues, you should refrain from using this drug as it can worsen the condition. Tell your doctor about this medical issue.

Conclusion

Propranolol is a beta-blocker that is prescribed for treating heart problems, anxiety symptoms, and migraines. The dosage prescribed will depend on the condition it is treated for and its severity. Follow the recommended dosage, as higher dosages can cause side effects like blurred vision and dizziness. Precautions, as mentioned above, have to be taken while using this drug to avoid complications and side effects.

Acanthosis Nigricans Causes

The abnormal growth of skin cells in the epidermis results in Acanthosis Nigricans. This growth normally happens when higher levels of insulin are found in the bloodstream. In very rare cases, the unusual reproduction of skin cells could also be due to medications, other medical conditions, or cancer.

1. Medications

Doses beyond the recommended level of some medications can trigger acanthosis nigricans. The medications are:

Birth control pills

Supplementary insulin injection

Nicotinic acid

Certain bodybuilding supplements

Oestrogen

Protease inhibitors

These medications disrupt the insulin levels in the body. Once the medications are stopped, the skin attains its normal colour.

2. Excess Insulin in the Bloodstream

When there is excess insulin in your bloodstream, the skin cells in the epidermis reproduce abnormally, causing acanthosis nigricans. This happens when your body develops resistance to insulin. The food you eat is converted into a sugar called glucose by your body. Insulin is necessary for the cells to use glucose for energy. Insulin should allow glucose to enter your cells for them to use glucose for energy. A part of the glucose is used for energy while your body stores the rest of it.

The body develops resistance to insulin if you are overweight. Though the body produces insulin, it cannot be used efficiently. This creates glucose buildup, which can result in excess glucose as well as insulin in your bloodstream. Excess insulin in the bloodstream leads to the rapid growth of skin cells. Excess melanin creates a patch that is darker than the skin surrounding it. The presence of these dark patches is an indicator that you may be prone to diabetes.

Other Acanthosis Nigricans Causes

The other potential Acanthosis Nigricans causes are:

Genetics

Autoimmune disorders like Hashimotoi’s Thyroiditis or Sjogren’s Disease

Deficiency in thyroid hormones

Gastric adenocarcinoma or stomach cancer

Pituitary gland disorder

High doses of niacin

Diagnosis of Acanthosis Nigricans

Acanthosis Nigricans is usually detected during a skin examination. However, your doctor may want to identify the underlying causes like insulin resistance or diabetes and may suggest the following:

Blood glucose test or fasting insulin tests

May review your medications to check if they are triggers. You should inform your doctor about any vitamins or bodybuilding supplements you are using besides prescription medicines for proper evaluation

Sometimes, a skin biopsy may be suggested to rule out other probable causes

Acanthosis Nigricans Treatment Options

There is no specific Acanthosis Nigricans treatment as it is not a disease but a warning sign for any other probable medical condition like diabetes. Diagnosing the underlying cause and treating the same will work as a treatment method for this condition as well.

If being overweight is causing acanthosis nigricans, then regular exercise and diet to maintain a healthy weight will be the treatment method. Also, medications will be prescribed to manage blood sugar levels. If the condition is due to any of the medications or supplements you are using, your doctor may suggest discontinuing them or may prescribe alternatives. When the cause is identified, and appropriate treatment is given, the dark patches will eventually fade away.

For individuals who are concerned about the appearance of dark patches, cosmetic treatments will be suggested. It may include using skin lighteners, laser therapy, or oral acne medications. However, these treatments will only work on the appearance and will not help cure the condition.

Conclusion

Acanthosis Nigricans is not a disease. It is a skin condition that is triggered by excess insulin in your bloodstream. This could be due to insulin resistance developed due to obesity. When insulin produced by your body is not effectively utilised by cells to take glucose to derive energy, there will be a buildup of glucose in your bloodstream. This will result in the rapid reproduction of skin cells that cause dark, velvety patches in skin folds.

The development of Acanthosis Nigricans can be an indicator of enhanced risk of diabetes. Early recognition of the underlying cause and treatment is crucial to prevent progression into serious health issues.

What is a Thyroid Test?

Thyroid hormones produced by thyroid glands control almost every organ in your body. The thyroid produces two hormones, i.e., triiodothyronine, known as T3, and thyroxine, known as T4.

These hormones control body temperature, metabolism as well as heart rate. Having the right levels of this hormone is crucial for effective bodily functions. If the hormone levels are low, the body functions slow down and speed up if the levels are high.

You may also be asked to get the TSH, i.e., Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Test done. TSH produced by the pituitary gland in your brain instructs the thyroid glands about the amount of thyroid hormones to be produced. If the test result shows high levels of TSH, it means low levels of thyroid hormones in your blood and vice versa.

If you are experiencing any symptoms relating to either high or low levels of thyroid hormones, you should consult a doctor and get a thyroid check up done. If the test results indicate abnormal levels, further tests may be required to identify the underlying cause.

What are the Different Types of Thyroid Tests?

Thyroid blood tests are done to measure the level of various thyroid hormones or antibodies. Abnormal levels indicate that you have a thyroid issue. The different types of thyroid blood tests done are:

TSH Test: Thyroid Stimulating Hormones produced by pituitary glands in the brain stimulate thyroid glands to produce the T3 and T4 hormones.

T3 Test: This test indicates the level of triiodothyronine hormones in your blood

T4 Test: This test indicates the level of thyroxine hormones in your blood.

Thyroid Antibodies Test: This indicates the presence or absence of thyroid antibodies. The presence of thyroid antibodies indicates that you have either Grave’s Disease or Hashimoto’s Disease, which are autoimmune disorders.

When Should a Thyroid Test be Done?

When you are experiencing symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, as mentioned below, a thyroid blood test has to be done.

1. Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism

Irregular heartbeats

Irritability and nervousness

Weight loss

Sweating

Frequent bowel movements

Goiter(thyroid enlargement)

Muscle weakness

Shivering hands

2. Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

Weight Gain

Sensitivity to cold

Joint and muscle pain

Hair fall and dry hair

Irregular periods or heavy menstrual flow

Constipation

Depression

Do You Have to Fast Before a Thyroid Test?

There is no special preparation required for a thyroid test. Your healthcare provider will tell you if you will have to fast before the test. Generally, if other blood tests are prescribed along with the thyroid test, your healthcare provider may ask you to fast for hours before the test.

Disrupted thyroid levels can hamper your day-to-day activities. A thyroid test will detect if you have low or high levels of thyroid hormones. If you are on medications for any existing health condition or if you are pregnant, you should disclose the same to your lab technician before the blood sample is taken. Certain medications and being pregnant may influence the test results.

Conclusion

A thyroid test is conducted to measure the level of thyroid hormones. The right levels of thyroid hormones produced by thyroid glands are necessary for optimal functioning of your body. These hormones regulate your body functions, including metabolism, heart rate, body weight, temperature, energy production, muscle strength, etc.

When the levels of these hormones are disrupted, you are likely to experience certain symptoms. You should immediately consult a doctor and get the thyroid checkup done if recommended.

If the test results indicate abnormal levels, further tests will be suggested to ascertain the underlying cause for appropriate treatment. Managing the levels of thyroid hormones is crucial for overall well-being.

Carrots are loaded with vitamins and minerals and consuming carrot juice once or twice a day will benefit you immensely. Some of the carrot juice benefits are:

 1. Aids Eye Health

Carrots contain Vitamin A in the form of provitamin A carotenoids in the form of beta carotene. Vitamin A plays a vital role in maintaining eye health. Studies have shown that provitamin A reduces the risk of blindness and age-related eye issues.

Carrot also contains lutein and zeaxanthin, the two carotenoids that protect your eyes from damaging light like blue light emerging from digital devices. Lutein and zeaxanthin reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration as well.

2. Boosts Immunity

Carrot juice contains Vitamin A as well as Vitamin C. The antioxidant properties of these vitamins protect immune cells from free radical damage. Carrot juice also contains Vitamin B6 which is required for immune response. A deficiency in Vitamin B6 results in a weakened immune system.

The production of Interleukin 2, a molecule that controls the activity of immune cells is reduced in older adults with Vitamin B6 deficiency. This may result in a weakened immune system. Consuming carrot juice provides the required vitamin B6 and stimulates the production of this molecule.

3. Helps Maintain Healthy Blood Sugar Levels

Carrot juice has a low glycemic index (GI). This index indicates how much certain foods influence the increase in blood sugar levels. Consuming foods and beverages with low glycemic index will help in regulating blood sugar levels. Carrot juice is considered a good alternative to high-GI vegetable or fruit juices.

4. Boosts Skin Health

Enhancing skin health is one of the best carrot juice benefits for females. This is because most women are conscious of their skin texture and brightness. Collagen helps maintain the elasticity of the skin and delays the ageing process. Vitamin C present in carrot juice aids the production of collagen. Also, the antioxidant properties of Vitamin C protect your skin from free radical damage.

5. Improves Sperm Quality

One of the specific carrot juice benefits for male is increasing sperm count and improving sperm health. Vitamin E, beta carotene (Vitamin A), and antioxidant properties prevent sperm damage and help improve sperm health. These sperms also have better mobility and aid in conception.

Carrot juice benefits for male include treating erectile dysfunction. Low levels of potassium and Vitamin E are one of the reasons for the advent of erectile dysfunction. Incorporating carrot juice which is rich in potassium and vitamin E into the diet may even help fight symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

6. Reduces the Risk of Cardiovascular Issues

Potassium plays an important role in regulating blood pressure levels. Carrot is a rich source of potassium. A diet rich in potassium not only helps in regulating blood pressure levels but also reduces the risk of a stroke. The antioxidant properties in carrots also help in enhancing heart health.

Precautions to be Taken When Drinking Carrot Juice

Though consuming carrot juice has more benefits and low to nil side effects, some precautions have to be taken while consuming the juice.

When prepared at home, it is not pasteurised to kill harmful bacteria. Individuals with weak immune systems, older adults, children, and pregnant women should avoid unpasteurised carrot juice.

Overconsumption of carrot juice can lead to carotenemia. It is a condition caused by high levels of beta-carotene and turns your skin colour to yellow or orange.

Carrot juice has a low level of fibre as compared to whole carrots and contains natural sugar. A low level of fibre means quick absorption of sugar into your bloodstream. Drinking more carrot juice may spike your blood sugar levels.

For deriving the numerous carrot juice benefits, it is better to moderate the consumption.

Conclusion

The best way to incorporate carrots into your diet to derive the benefits is by way of carrot juice. Consuming carrot juice regularly will help the upkeep of skin, eyes, and heart health. It also helps in regulating blood pressure and blood sugar levels while boosting the immune system. However, consuming carrot juice in moderation is suggested for optimal results.
