Ajinkya Rahane, who is returning to the Test team after almost 18 months, did the work that Team India's upper order could not do, along with lower-order Shardul Thakur. Rahane and Shardul took the seventh wicket on the third day of the final of the World Test Championship. An important 109-run partnership for India took India to a score of 296. Team India fell behind Australia by a huge margin of 173 runs in the first innings. Although this pair definitely saved India from the follow-on by crossing the figure of 270. Australia has scored 123 runs for four wickets in the second innings and its total lead has increased to 296 runs, while 6 wickets are still remaining.
Rahane 13th Indian to score 5000 runs Rahane completed his 5000 runs in Tests during his innings of 89 runs in 129 balls. He became the 13th Indian batsman to score 5000 Test runs. Shardul hit his fourth half-century. All four half-centuries have come on foreign soil with his bat.
Shardul's two catches had to be left costly On the third day, the difficulties of the backward team India increased from the beginning by 318 runs. KS Bharat (5) was bowled on Boland's second ball of the day. The situation would have been worse had it not been for Shardul's catch at slip and gully by Usman and Green at two, 8. Both these catches cost Australia dearly. Rahane- Shardul then hit back at the Australian bowlers. Rahane hit the first four and six in Cummins's over to complete his 26th Test half-century.
Thakur hit his third half-century at The Oval
Shardul also got life on a personal score of 36. He was adjudged lbw on Cummins' ball, but it turned out to be a no-ball. On the second day, Rahane was given out by the umpire on a personal score of 17, but then Cummins' ball turned out to be a no-ball. If Shardul is called a troubleshooter, then there will be no exaggeration. He completed his fourth half-century.
■ This was his third half-century at the Oval. He scored all his four Test half-centuries when the Indian team was in trouble. By lunch, India scored 260 runs for six wickets. Both the batsmen shared a 108-run partnership during this period.

Umesh Yadav took the first wicket of the match after tea. He got Usman Khawaja (13) caught by Bharat. Steve Smith (34) and Travis Head (18), who scored centuries in the first innings, were dismissed by Jadeja. Some of Jadeja's deliveries swung tremendously. At the end of the third day's play, Marnus Labushane was playing on 41 off 118 balls and Cameron Green was playing on 7 runs.
