How to Know if Eggs are Good or Not?

Eggs are something we can easily find in our kitchen or in the refrigerator. Consuming eggs every day is important for keeping your body healthy and active. Although, knowing when eggs expire or how long eggs last in the fridge is equally important. This is because the consumption of bad eggs can lead to serious health issues. Maintaining proper hygiene can help in the prevention of foodborne diseases.

1. Smell

One of the easiest things you can do to check eggs is by cracking them open and smelling them. If you get a pungent smell, then your eggs are safe for consumption. Sometimes, we tend to crack the eggs by mistake during handling or transportation. This allows the bacteria to enter the egg and develop a bad nasty odour inside the shell. You won’t be finding this smell in the fresh eggs.

An already cracked egg should not be consumed as it may contain bacteria in it.

2. Appearance

Checking the appearance of the egg is another way to determine if it is okay for consumption or not. Here, all you have to do is crack your eggs and look for brown or black spots. These spots indicate mould. However, if you notice red blood spots (red specks) and dark brown spots floating on the egg yolk and egg white, do not throw them away.

They don’t indicate spoilage and they are completely safe to consume, when cooked properly. If you don’t like the spots, you can remove them with a spoon. But eggs with brown or black spots should not be consumed.

3. Float test

Another way you can check if your eggs are old or not is by doing a float test. This is one of the most popular methods of determining the condition of your frozen eggs. To do this test, you need a bucket or a big bowl. Fill the bucket or bowl with water and carefully place the egg inside. If the egg floats or tilts upward, then it is rotten and should not be consumed.

This generally happens when an egg is kept stored for too long, the air pockets inside the egg get filled with air. And when the air pockets become larger, the eggs tend to float.

How Long Do Boiled Eggs Last?

A very common question we often ask is: how long do boiled eggs last?

If we handle and store them properly, boiled eggs last for one week. Boiled eggs need to be kept inside the shelf of the fridge and cooled within two hours of boiling.

Properly storing eggs can help in extending the boiled egg’s shelf life. You can keep your boiled eggs fresh by keeping them in the original container or eggs storage inside the refrigerator. Keeping them in this manner helps keep the moisture as well as other contaminants out.

What are the Benefits of Eggs?

There are multiple benefits of eating good quality eggs. Read some of the important benefits below:

1. Helping Boost Energy Levels

One of the best benefits of eggs is that they contain nearly 18% of riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2. It is only one of the eight B vitamins that helps your body convert the food you consume throughout the day into energy. This energy keeps your body active the entire day.

2. Helping Improve Hair and Skin Health

Another benefit of consuming eggs is that it helps to improve and repair your skin and hair. B-complex vitamins are essential for keeping your hair, skin, liver, and eyes healthy and eggs are a great source of B vitamins.

Owing to the presence of B12 and B5, eggs also help maintain the proper function of your nervous system and boost your muscle strength. Some people are allergic to egg yolk. For them, consuming egg white works best.

3. Helping Reduce Metabolic Diseases

Consuming eggs every day is the best way to increase your good or HDL cholesterol levels. People who have a high HDL cholesterol level suffer less from stroke, heart disease, and other conditions related to health. Some studies suggest that increasing the consumption of dietary cholesterol by eating eggs can help decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

4. Helping Develop Lean Muscle

People who are in the athletic field or work out daily might be aware of the importance of consuming eggs for better energy and muscle health. When you exercise your muscles with heavy weights, there is always a risk of muscle wear and tear. In such a situation, egg proteins help repair the tears in the muscle tissues.

Eggs can be a great post-workout meal or snack as eating just an egg can give 6 gm of the muscle-developing macro. All you need to do is boil and fry two eggs with veggies to make a perfect post-workout breakfast.

5. Helping Improve Immune System

Having a strong immune system is extremely important for preventing viruses, diseases, and infections from interfering with your health. Eat at least two eggs daily to have a fit and healthy body. A single-boiled egg contains around 15.4 micrograms of selenium which helps strengthen your immune system and control your thyroid hormones.

Conclusion

Eggs are an extremely good source for achieving all the nutrients and vitamins that help keep us active and healthy. However, things can go wrong if expired eggs are consumed. To keep them fresh for a longer time, one must keep them in the fridge and consume them before it’s too late. If necessary, one can also follow the above-mentioned steps to determine the shelf life of eggs.
