The way to get rid of beard hair (story)

 A Tehsildar was newly appointed in the court of Mithila King. He wanted to increase his importance in the eyes of the Maharaja by forcibly collecting revenue from the people. People were unhappy with his attitude.


Tehsildar reached Gonu Jha's village and there too, under the influence of his position, started collecting land revenue from the people tyrannically. To create pressure, he got the crops of many defaulters cut.


The matter reached Gonu Jha. Gonu Jha along with some villagers reached the place where the Tehsildar was staying.


Gonu Jha and the villagers accompanying him greeted the Tehsildar. At that time the Tehsildar was sitting on a chair wrapped in a scarf, sunbathing. Seeing the villagers coming, he said while caressing his beard – “Why have you guys come here at this time?”


Gonu Jha took command of the conversation and said, “Yesterday in the court, Maharaj was praising you that ever since you came, there has been a rapid increase in the treasury, that is why I have come to meet you. These villagers have also come to see you.” Hearing the words of Gonu Jha, the arrogance of the Tehsildar increased. Just then Gonu Jha saw a hair near the chair. He pinched that hair and picked it up. Touched it on the forehead. Then he kissed that hair and touched it to both his eyes and then tied it in the peg of his dhoti. The villagers were astounded that what had occurred to Pandit ji that he was saving the hair of a man worse than this animal out of so much respect?


The villagers asked, “Pandit ji! Why are you saving your hair?"


Gonu Jha said, “My luck has awakened. I dreamed early in the morning that I was predicted to go. Somehow get a hair of his beard from Tehsildar Saheb's court. If you are successful in doing this then you will not lack anything. Whoever has the Tehsildar's hair, his fortune will shine and he will find the way to freedom from poverty."


The Tehsildar was elated after hearing all this. Some villagers came forward and touched the feet of the Tehsildar. With great reverence and humility he asked for a hair of his beard. The Tehsildar plucked a hair from his beard and handed it to him.


Gonu Jha returned with the villagers and started his daily work. A mysterious smile had appeared on his face.


Within a short time, the Tehsildar's miraculous beard started being discussed in the entire village. The entire village gathered at the Tehsildar's residence. At first the Tehsildar pulled hair from his beard and gave it to some people, but the number of people asking kept increasing.


The last sight of Gonu Jha's method of teaching the Tehsildar a lesson without saying anything was that the Tehsildar was running away and the villagers were running after him to get a hair of his liberating beard. Whoever came near the Tehsildar, he would pluck his beard. Somehow the Tehsildar went out of the village. He sent his belongings to the peons and never again had the courage to go to Gonu Jha's village to collect land revenue.
