Menstruation for women is mentioned in the Puranas? There is also a mythological story on why they have menstruation, which is related to Indra Dev. According to a story mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana, once 'Brihaspati' who was the teacher of the gods, became very angry with Indra Dev. Due to this the Asuras attacked Devloka and Indra had to leave his throne and run away.
While saving himself from the demons, he approached Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, and sought his help. Then Brahma ji told him that he should serve a Brahma-knowledgeable, if he becomes happy then only he will get back his throne. As per the order, Indra Dev got engaged in the service of a Brahma-knowledgeable. But they were unaware that the sage's mother was an Asura, so he had a special place in his heart for Asuras.
All the ingredients of Havan offered by Indra Dev which is offered to the gods, the wise man was offering it to the Asuras. Due to this, all his service was getting dissolved. When Indra Dev came to know everything, he became very angry and he killed that Brahma-knowledgeable.
Killing a guru was a heinous sin, due to which the sin of Brahmhatya fell on him. This sin started following Indra in the form of a terrible demon. Somehow Indra hid himself inside a flower and did penance to Lord Vishnu for one lakh years.
Pleased with the penance, Lord Vishnu saved Indra Dev but gave a suggestion for the salvation of the sin imposed on him. For this, Indra had to give a little part of his sin to the tree, water, land and woman. Everyone agreed on Indra's request but in return they asked Indra Dev to give them a boon.
First the tree took one-fourth of that sin for which Indra gave it a boon. According to the boon, if the tree wishes, it can revive itself.
After this, on giving water a share of sin, Indra Dev gave it the power to purify other things.
This is the reason why even today in Hinduism, water is considered holy and used in worship.
Indra Dev gave the third sin to Bhoomi as a boon, he told Bhoomi that any injury inflicted on him would always be healed.
Now it was the last turn of the woman. According to this legend, as a result of giving a share of sin to a woman, she gets menstruation every month. But to grant them a boon, Indra said that "women will enjoy work many times more than men".During this time she is carrying the sin of brahma-hatya i.e. killing her guru, so she is asked to stay away from her guru and God. This is the reason why since ancient times, women were prohibited from visiting the temple during menstruation.
